Music

D.F. Malherbe’s music department has two permanent music teachers who strives to create a platform for learners to develop their technical musical abilities.

Music is offered as a subject from grade 10 to 12 and includes music theory, music history, aural development, composition or arranging, and practical lessons. Practical lessons are also offered to learners from grade 8 to 12 who do not wish to take music as a school subject. Instrumental tuition is offered in piano, flute, recorder, classical singing, pop singing, drums, guitar, and saxophone.

Syllabi of the following external examination bodies are used for the practical component of music as a subject:

  • Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM)
  • UNISA
  • Trinity Guildhall (TCL)
  • Rock school

The minimum requirement for grade 12 is grade 5 practical and grade 5 music theory.
