DF Malherbe started with an English debating club in 2014. This club started participating in the Port Elizabeth / Uitenhage schools’ debate league in 2015. The league takes place in the first term of every school year. It is for senior teams only, but there is an informal platform for junior debating teams to participate as well. Learners who do not have the chance to debate during a league round will act as chairperson or timekeeper.
Learners attend an annual debating training workshop to stay up to date with new rules in the competition. Furthermore learners participate in the annual debating festival where schools from Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Port Alfred and East London participate.
This gives learners extra exposure and is always lots of fun. Debating develops public speaking skills, argumentative skills, teamwork and builds self-confidence. This is crucial for any learner’s future.
